What you'll need

  • Felt
  • Embroidery thread
  • Dull tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Marker (optional)

How to make it

  1. Optional: draw heart shapes on the backside of the felt for your child to use as a guide to cut out the shapes.  If your little one is not comfortable with cutting fabric you can cut the hearts for them.  You are aiming for hearts that are about two inches across.
  2. Once you have cut a nice group of hearts you are ready to string them together.  If you used more than one color of felt you might want to map out a pattern.
  3. Thread the needle with a long length of embroidery thread.  Assist your child in pushing the needle through the left side of the first heart; sometimes it needs a little wiggle.  Show them how to pull the string through and push the needle back through the other side a little further along.
  4. Continue this straight stitch, adding each heart until you come the end.  Note: some children will need a lot of assistance; others will be able to complete this task with very little help.
  5. Use your cute garland to decorate for Valentine's Day or just to add a little love to any day of the year.
