After his beloved wife Ellie passes away, Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year old retired balloon salesman, ties thousands of balloons to his roof. It's a beautiful and awesome sight as the house lifts off its foundation and Karl and his 8-year-old neighbor, the enthusiastic Junior Wilderness Explorer Russell, set sail for South America. That's where Carl and Ellie always dreamed of living. Inspired by Carl's innovative endeavor, this colorful card features a bouquet of heart-shaped balloons and a sweet valentine message for someone special.

What you'll need

Scissors

Scrapbook paper (assorted colors)

Colored pencil or fine-tipped marker

Ruler

Glue stick or glue dots

How to make it

Valentine Balloon Bouquet 1

1. Print out the template and cut out the pieces. Cut out a bunch of heart balloons from bright colored papers. You can cut out several at once by stacking small squares of paper and then setting the template on top and cutting around it. Next, cut the remaining house pieces out of brown paper. (Note: using different shades of brown will make the house look more three-dimensional.)

2. Help your child assemble the house by gluing the window bay onto the front piece, as shown. Glue on the roof with the lower edge resting right above the window bay.

3. Then glue on the window bay roof and the dormer. Finally, attach the chimney by gluing the bottom edge to the back of the roof. Draw window and door squares on the house.

4. Now create a tall thin card by folding an 8 1/2- by 11-inch piece of scrapbook paper in half.

5. Have your child glue the assembled house to the bottom of the card. Then he can glue the heart balloons in "the sky" above the house, overlapping them a bit to create a big cluster.

6. Draw balloon strings from the bottoms of the hearts to the chimney top, and print a valentine message, such as "Valentine, You Make My Heart Soar," inside the card.
