Today was the first rainy, miserable day of autumn in Brooklyn. It’s like an oatmeal commercial out there. And you know what’s perfect on a day like an oatmeal commercial? Oatmeal. A warm bowl of oatmeal with fresh fall fruit, a little brown sugar, and a splash of milk is a comforting way to prepare to face an uncomfortable world.
This oatmeal was also a great family breakfast, appealing to grown-ups, kids, and toddlers alike. It’s downright loaded with fresh fruit, so it’s a healthy way to start the day too! A hint of brown sugar and fresh-grated cinnamon ensure that the kids will come back for more of this whole grain breakfast treat.
I like my oatmeal on the firm side, so my recipe details the proportions and cook time that I prefer. If you like your oatmeal on the softer side, go with a ratio of 1 part oats to 2 parts water and cook for a total of 20 minutes.
