Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler

by Cindy Littlefield

With all the toys in Andy's room, you might think that a snake without a speaking part would have little problem slithering under the radar. Not so. Woody is quick to notice the elusive bright green and blue reptile partially hidden under the bed and puts him and Robot to work building a podium out of Legos and Tinker Toys. Likewise, this vibrant striped rattler is easy to spot and fun to play with. Made of felt with a pipe cleaner center, its body can curve and coil just like a real snake.

What you'll need

  • 4 pipe cleaners
  • Felt (green and blue)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Hot glue gun
  • Googly eyes
  • 3-inch length red yarn or string

How to make it

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 1

Twist the ends of two pipe cleaners together to form one long length. Do the same with the remaining two pipe cleaners.

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 2

Then place these two long lengths side by side and twist them together to create one thick length.

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 3

Cut a 3/4- by 4-inch strip from the green felt and glue one end to the tail end of the pipe cleaner, as shown.

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 4

Wrap the strip around the pipe cleaner to create a "rattle" and glue the loose end down, as shown.

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 5

Create two more rattles out of a 1- by 5 1/2-inch strip and a 1- by 9-inch strip, but this time, rather than wrapping them directly around the pipe cleaner, roll them into coils and glue down the loose edges. Make sure the centers are just loose enough for the pipe cleaner to thread through. Slide the coils onto the body and push them up against the first rattler.

Next, use 1- by 11 1/2-inch felt strips to create 6 green coils and 7 blue ones. Slide them onto the pipe cleaner, alternating the colors. Then use a 1 3/4- by12-inch strip to make a slightly larger green coil for the snake's head. Thread it onto the end of the pipe cleaner and apply a dab of glue to the center of the coil to hold it in place.

Andy's Friendly Felt Rattler step 7

Glue a circle of felt onto the open end of the head coil, as shown. Then trim the perimeter so it is flush with the coil.

For the snake's tongue, knot one end of the red yarn or string and glue the knot to the front of the head. Trim the yarn to length and unravel the strands to fork the tongue.

Finally, glue a googly eye to each side of the head.
