Easy Classic Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Easy Classic Irish Soda Bread Recipe

By Kelsey Banfield

A few years ago I found a recipe for Irish Soda Bread on Epicurious that I really like. It is easy to make at home, delicious to eat and doesn’t require any fancy bread making techniques. It is classic Irish Soda Bread, pure and simple. I’ve made a few loaves recently in honor of St. Patrick’s Day coming up. We’ve been eating it toasted with butter for breakfast, or spread with a soft cheese for lunch. It is a delicious, easy snack any time of day. Top o’ the morning to you!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 5 tablespoons sugar, divided
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoons baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter cut into cubes
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2/3 cup raisins

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375ºF.
  2. Whisk flour, 4 tablespoons of sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda in a large bowl to blend. Use your fingers to cut in the butter until the batter resembles a coarse meal. Pour in the buttermilk and use a wooden spoon to stir in the milk. Then stir in the raisins.
  3. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a butter 8″ round cake pan. Flatten the top of the dough slightly, but do not press it to the edges of the pan. Sprinkle the top with the remaining sugar and bake for about 40 minutes.
