Craft: Sponge Crown

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

This colorful crown makes a cool king or queen out of anyone - especially when you give it a good squeeze.

Materials

  • 4 New Sponges in different colors (ours were 3 1/2 inches by 6 inches, and 1 inch thick; thicker sponges will get the wearer wetter but may be tougher to cut)
  • Marker
  • Scrap Paper (optional)
  • Scissors
  • 4 Pipe Cleaners

Instructions

Sponge Crown - Step 1

1. Thoroughly rinse the sponges before you begin to get rid of any antibacterial residue. We suggest waiting until the rinsed sponges are dry, or only a bit damp, before you make the shapes. Use a marker to draw an aquatic design (fish, sea stars, boat) freehand on each sponge, or create a paper pattern to trace. Draw 1 design per sponge and use as much of the sponge as possible. Cut out the shapes.

2. A different pipe cleaner will be used to attach each sponge. Trim each pipe cleaner to 9 inches. Poke one end of the first pipe cleaner through a sponge shape, as shown below. If necessary, use a knitting needle or large embroidery needle to make a hole first. Twist the pipe cleaner end in place.

3. Push the other end of the pipe cleaner through the next shape, as shown, and twist it in place (start with 1 inch between shapes and adjust later for fit). Use another pipe cleaner to attach the next shape, and so on. Trim off any excess pipe cleaner.

4. Soak the crown in water, place it on the lucky royal's head, and give the sponges a good squeeze for a watery coronation.
