Christmas Crafts: Snow Angel Decoration

Snow Angel Decoration

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

Dressed in a soft, snow-white robe, this angel will look heavenly (or at least your kids will think so) set on a table or perched atop your Christmas tree.

Materials

  • Thin wooden kitchen skewer
  • Smooth foam ball (4 inches in diameter, sold in the floral section of craft stores)
  • Acrylic paint (for face) and paintbrush
  • Double-sided foam tape
  • Googly eyes
  • Red construction paper
  • 32-ounce plastic container (yogurt container or convenience-store soda cup)
  • Pushpin
  • Polyester quilt batting
  • Several glittery gold and silver pipe cleaners
  • Small sewing pins
  • Gold tinsel or tinsel ribbon (sold on a spool)
  • White and pink craft foam
  • Gold glitter glue (or gold puffy paint)

Instructions

1. Start with the angel's face: Push the pointed end of the wooden skewer 2 to 3 inches into the foam ball. Holding the ball by the skewer, paint it so that it is well coated, then prop the skewer in a glass and allow the paint to dry completely. Use double-sided foam tape to attach the googly eyes and a red paper mouth.

2. To create the snow-white robe, turn the plastic container upside down and use the pushpin to make a hole through the center of the bottom (where the skewer will be inserted later). Apply four equally spaced strips of the double-sided tape to the sides of the container, as shown above. Next, cut long 6-inch-wide strips from the quilt batting. Twist the end of one strip and stick it against the tape near the bottom of the container and begin winding the strip around the container in rows, twisting the battling into a loose roll as you go. When you get to the end of the strip, continue with more strips of battling until the container is completely covered. For trim, wrap glittery gold pipe cleaners around the robe.

3. Next, create the golden curls: Attach the foam head to the body by inserting the blunt end of the skewer through the hole in the container. Then cover the head with curls by pinning strands of tinsel or tinsel ribbon to the foam ball in a zigzag fashion. For a halo, shape a silver pipe cleaner into a circle and twist the ends together. Attach a second pipe cleaner for the the halo stem and wrap the lower end around the skewer just below the angel's head.

4. Lastly, make wings and things from the white craft foam, by cutting out a pair of butterfly like wings and two 8 1/2-inch-long arms. Tape the arms together to form one piece that wraps three quarters of the way around the angel. Use glitter glue to trim the wings and sleeves. Once the glue is dry, use the double-sided tape to attach the arms to the batting and then the wings to the back of the arms. Cut out pink foam mitten-shaped hands and tape them to the inside ends of the sleeves.

5. For the finishing touch, cut out a small songbook from the red construction paper and adorn it with glitter glue. Use more double-sided tape to attach the book to the angel's hands.
