On-the-go Journal

Total Time Needed: 1-2 Hours

Hanging on to memories is easy with this handy take-along journal that masquerades as a pocketbook.

Materials

  • 20-gauge wire
  • Blank hardcover journal
  • Plastic beads
  • Hot glue
  • Rickrack, ribbon, or fringe
  • Ribbon

Instructions

On-the-go Journal - Step 1

1. Run a length of 20-gauge wire (we used 25-inch wires for our 4- by 61⁄4-inch books) through the gap in the spine of a blank hardcover journal. (To be sure a book has a sufficient gap, open the front and back covers at the same time. You should be able to see along the spine between the cover and the bound edge of the pages.)

2. Thread plastic beads onto the wire until the handle is the desired length. Twist together the wires near the spine of the book, then trim them with wire cutters (a parent's job) and tuck the twist back into the gap in the spine to avoid jabs.

3. To decorate the cover, hot-glue on rickrack, ribbon, or fringe. Finally, tie on a loop of ribbon for a pen holder.
