Not many people would be aware of this cabbage and shrimps pairing, but this dish is quite common is bengali households. During my childhood I used to refuse any preparation of cabbage, till the time my mum started cooking it this way.
This is quite easy and hassle-free to prepare. Some people like to cook it with peas instead of shrimps. However, I prefer it this way to give a non-veg twist to it.
Ingredients
- Shrimps - 250 gms, cleaned and deveined
- Cabbage - 1, small sized, finely shredded
- Bay leaf - 1 no.
- Ginger - 1 tbsp., grated
- Whole cumin seeds - 1 tsp.
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp.
- Red chilli powder - 1 tsp.
- Coriander powder - 1 tbsp.
- Onions - 2 medium sized, finely chopped
- Tomatoes - 2, medium sized, finely chopped
- Oil - 4 tbsp.
- Sugar - 1/2 tsp.
- Salt as per taste
Preparation
- Heat oil in a kadai, add the shrimps along with a little bit of turmeric powder and salt. Saute for about 5 minutes. Take out from kadai and keep aside.
- Now add bay leaf and cumin seeds. Let it crackle for few seconds.
- Add chopped onion and grated ginger. Fry for 3-4 minutes. Then add the cabbage and stir for 2-3 minutes.
- Then add the turmeric, red chilli and coriander powder. Mix well and add the chopped tomatoes, salt and sugar. Lower heat, cover and cook for 10-12 minutes.
- Add the fried shrimps, cover and further cook for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove cover, turn up heat and cook stirring continuously till it becomes dry.
