Total Time 1 Hour Ages School Age

by Mia Cronan

Your community will immediately feel safe when they see the newest member of the fire department on Halloween night! This easy-to-make costume uses a black sweat suit and colored duct tape. You'll have a great time making it!

What you'll need

  • Black sweatpants
  • Black sweatshirt, over-sized
  • White t-shirt
  • Bright yellow duct tape
  • Silver metallic duct tape
  • Dark boots or shoes, and dark socks
  • Gray or black make-up
  • Pretend firefighter badge
  • Pretend firefighter helmet
  • Stuffed Dalmatian
  • Optional: toy axe

Helpful tip:

1. Your local fire department will most likely be able to help with the helmet and badge.Often times they have these things available to children for education. 2. If you don't have a Dalmatian for him to carry, you might use a baby doll instead. 3. We found the colored duct tape at our local craft store. Mia Cronan is a craft freelancer and mother of five based in Ohio.

How to make it

  1. Begin by cutting the front of the sweatshirt all the way up the front to form a jacket look. Place strips of silver duct tape across the body, all the way around, two times (see image). With the yellow duct tape, outline the front, bottom, and cuffs of the jacket. Place two strips of silver duct tape around each sleeve.
  2. Using the silver duct tape, place a strip down each leg on the outside of the sweatpants (see image).
  3. Dress your little firefighter in the t-shirt, jacket, pants, and boots or shoes. Smear dark make-up on his face in random places to look like soot and grime. Place the toy badge on the jacket front, place the hat on his head, and he's ready to fight any fire in the city!
  4. If it's not too inconvenient, he may want to carry a toy axe and a stuffed Dalmatian.
