White Hot Chocolate with Toasted Marshmallows Recipe

White Hot Chocolate with Toasted Marshmallows Recipe

By JulieVR

As long as there’s snow on the ground, skiing and skating to be done and chilly walks home from school, hot chocolate is still in season. If your kids are fans of hot chocolate, there’s something you should know about the instant stuff. Here’s the ingredient list from Carnation Rich & Creamy Hot Chocolate:

Sugar, corn syrup solids, hydrogenated vegetable oil (may contain coconut, palm kernel and/or soybean oil), modified milk ingredients, cocoa, cellulose gum, salt, dipotassium phosphate, silicon dioxide, artificial flavor, mono- and diglycerides, guar gum, sodium aluminum silicate

YUM! It just makes me want to curl up beside a roaring fire with a steaming mug of dipotassium phosphate and sodium aluminum silicate. Which goes so well with marshmallows.

The good news is, it’s as easy to make hot chocolate from real ingredients (milk, chocolate or cocoa, sugar or honey) as it is to stir up a mix. And wouldn’t you rather serve your kids (and yourself) real ingredients?

It’s even easier to pour warmed milk over chopped or grated chocolate in a mug, and stir. Dark and milk chocolates are the norm, but white chocolate, which is softer and creamier to begin with, melts beautifully into milk, making creamy white hot chocolate that’s like a warm milkshake, only better.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. white chocolate, chopped or grated on the coarse side of a box grater
  • 1 cup milk, warmed until steaming

Directions

  1. Put the chocolate into your mug, pour the milk overtop and let it sit for a minute, then stir until smooth. Top with marshmallows – plain or toasted – if you like.
  2. And if you’re the type who likes marshmallows floating on top, melting around the edges, here’s a tip: roast them first! This is easy to do if you have a mini blowtorch – or skewer them with a long fondue fork and carefully torch them over your gas stove, or put them on a foil-lined sheet and run them under the broiler. Or if it’s summertime, you can take your mug of hot chocolate outside, and drop toasted marshmallows straight in to enjoy fireside.
