I really hate to admit this, but I’ve become a bit of a margarita snob. Once I started drinking fresh lime margaritas, it was just impossible to go back to the pre-mixed stuff. Is anyone with me on this? Please tell me I’m not alone.
Margaritas really should be made with real limes, I’m pretty sure that’s how they were intended to be concocted before the days of busy bartenders churning out dozens of margaritas at a time from a machine or large pre-mixed container. A few to many headaches and belly aches later…I have finally learned that the perfect margarita is made with just a few ingredients…a few good ingredients that is.
Trust me on this one.

Fresh Lime Margaritas
Recipe adapted from The Barefoot Contessa
Ingredients
- 1 lime, halved
- Kosher salt
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (5 limes)
- 1/4 1/3 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (fresh is important here!)
- 1 cup Triple Sec or orange flavored liquor
- 1 teaspoon agave nectar (optional), for additional sweetness
- 3 cups ice
- 1 cup good white tequila
Directions
- If you like margaritas served in a glass with salt, rub the outside rims of six glasses with a cut lime and dip each glass lightly into a plate of kosher salt.
- Combine the lime juice, orange juice, Triple Sec, and ice in a blender and puree until completely blended. Add the tequila and pulse a few times. Serve over ice.
