Super Bowl Food: Grilled Cheese Footballs

By Ole & Shaina Olmanson

If you have kids hanging at your Super Bowl party, these football-shaped grilled cheese sandwiches are sure to make them squeal. I don’t know about yours, but my kids are super excited for Super Bowl Sunday. They have dreams of party food and cheering loudly for their favorite team, who will be decided at the beginning of the game and determined by which color suits them best that day. Grilled cheese is a snack everyone can readily agree on, and it’s a great accompaniment to a bowl of chili, too, which happens to be standard Super Bowl food in our house.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bread of choice
  • 3-4 ounces thinly sliced cheese
  • butter for toasting
  • 1 piece mozzarella string cheese

Directions

  1. Using kitchen shears or a football-shaped cookie cutter, cut an even number of footballs out of the bread. Cut cheese slices to fit in the footballs and make sandwiches. Lightly butter both sides of the bread.
  2. Heat a skillet to medium heat. While the skillet is warming, pull the string cheese into thin strips. Cut each strip into 1 long and 3 short, even pieces and set aside. Toast each sandwich in the skillet, 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip the football sandwich and place the string cheese on the toasted side to resemble laces on the football. Remove the sandwich from the pan when the second side has browned. The laces should have melted into place slightly.
  3. Serve warm.
