Summer Serendipity: Frozen Hot Chocolate

By JulieVR

Made famous by the movie Serendipity (starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale), frozen hot chocolate is like an icy milkshake – a chocolate slushy of sorts, or a non-alcoholic chocolate margarita (although there’s no rule against adding booze for the grown-ups) – less creamy than a milkshake, it’s made with milk and crushed ice instead of cream or ice cream. Frozen hot chocolate makes a creamy-chocolate-y-icy drink when the temperature demands a sippable cool-down. It’s easy to whiz up in your blender, cheaper than going out for ice cream, and lower in sugar than other frozen options, with a tablespoon of honey per 2-4 servings.

Frozen Hot Chocolate

If you like, begin with your favorite chocolate milk instead of the milk-cocoa-honey mixture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 Tbsp. honey (or to taste)
  • 3 cups ice (cubed or crushed)
  • whipped cream, for garnish

Directions

In a blender, whiz the milk, cocoa and honey until well blended. Add the ice and pulse until the ice is crushed and the mixture has a slushy consistency. Serve immediately, topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Serves 2-4.
