Patriotic Fruit Salad Recipe

Patriotic Fruit Salad Recipe

By Elizabeth Stark

Need a last-minute dish to give your Fourth of July cookout that little extra something? Something sweet, juicy, and reflective of your love of country? This patriotic fruit salad should do the trick and it uses ingredients that are likely already in your house (assuming you are having watermelon. That’s a safe assumption, right?). According to Wikipedia, a fruit salad must have minimum of three fruits, so with watermelon, blueberries, and apple, you can rest assured that this is an internet-certified authentic fruit salad. It’s also patriotic because it has things that are red, white, and blue, as well as watermelon and apples cut into star shapes. The star is the most American of the decagons.

Now to tackle an unpleasant subject: as a parent, you may be a little leery of making a fruit salad for fear of getting the Wiggles song “Fruit Salad” stuck in your head. I understand your fear. I’ve never even seen the Wiggles and somehow I know that song and get it stuck in my head. All I can say is–kids really do love fruit salad and at this point the song is probably stuck in your head anyway, so you might as well make it.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 a watermelon, sliced into large rounds 1/2 – 3/4″ thick
  • 4 crisp apples, sliced into rounds 1/2″ thick, cores removed
  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries
  • 3 tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice

Directions

  1. Cut up the watermelon and apples into large rounds and cut up using star shaped cookie cutters. I have a 1″ and a 3″, but use whatever you have handy.
  2. Toss the fruit together, and drizzle with dressing. Serve immediately.
