Few places rival the refrigerator for showcasing school papers and works of art. These magnetic miniatures, crafted from clothespins and felt, give kids a special place to hang their achievements with "Way to go!" fanfare.

What you'll need

  • Fine-point marker
  • Colorful felt
  • Scissors
  • Tacky glue
  • Pipe cleaner (ours is cut to 4 inches)
  • Wooden clothespin with a spring
  • Photo of your child's face, cut to size
  • Construction paper
  • Toothpick with the tips cut off
  • 3-inch length of self-adhesive magnetic strip

How to make it

  1. Draw pants or a skirt and 2 matching shirts on felt to fit your clothespins. Cut them out.
  2. Glue the pipe cleaner to one shirt, then glue the shirt to the clothespin, sandwiching the pipe cleaner between the felt and the wood as shown. Glue the other shirt to the front of the clothespin and the first shirt, then glue on a skirt or pants.
  3. Glue the photo face in place and add details (we cut the sweater stripe with pinking shears). Allow the glue to dry completely, then draw on shoes and legs.
  4. Cut a triangle from construction paper, add words of encouragement with the marker, then glue the flag to one end of the toothpick. Let the glue dry, then wrap one of the pipe cleaner hands around the pennant.
  5. Mount the magnetic strip to the back of the clothespin. Hang the magnet on the fridge.
