Buzz Book Badge Craft

Total Time 1 hour Ages school-age

True, his spaceship is little more than cardboard packaging and his control panel is actually a shiny sticker. Nonetheless, space ranger Buzz Lightyear is ever ready to answer the call to duty wherever it may take him! And that includes infinity and beyond. Made from paper cutouts, this colorful emblem enables the fearless action figure to accomplish an important mission - putting a new and friendly face on your child's notebook or journal cover.

What you'll need

  • Template for Buzz Book Badge
  • Scissors
  • Scrapbook paper or cardstock (purplish-blue, light orange or tan, green, brown, and white)
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils or fine tipped markers
  • Laminating sheet (sold in office supply stores)

How to make it

  1. Print out the template and use it to cut out pieces from the specified colors of paper or cardstock.
  2. Glue the face onto the hood, matching up the curved edges on the right. Glue the ear shape in place atop the hood.
  3. Have your child use the pencils or markers to draw blue irises and black pupils on the eyeballs positioning them where indicated on the template. Then glue the eyelids in place.
  4. Glue the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth onto the face, positioning them as shown on the template.
  5. Fit the head and neckline pieces together at the bottom of the helmet circle and then glue them in place.
  6. Now your child can embellish the face by lightly penciling on distinguishing details, such as a swirled line to create a dimple in Buzz's chin and curved smile lines extending from the corners of his mouth. Once he's satisfied, he can darken the lines by tracing over them with colored pencils or markers. He may also want to lightly outline the facial features to make them stand out more.
  7. Glue the finished book badge to the cover of the notebook your child wants to decorate. Finally, to protect the badge from wear and tear, cover it with a piece of the laminating sheet, using your hands to press down firmly and evenly.
