Colored tapes offer a quick, inexpensive, and easy way to personalize toys and sports equipment. The best part? An updated look is as easy to come by as a new roll of tape.

What you'll need

  • Red duct tape, silver duct tape (for the Hot Seat), black duct tape (for the Gone Buggy)
  • Waxed or parchment paper
  • Permanent marker
  • Hole punch

How to make it

  1. Hot Seat For each flame, stick a strip of red duct tape to a piece of waxed or parchment paper (see Tips and Resources). Flip over the paper and use a permanent marker to draw a flame shape on the back, then cut it out.
  2. To create an inner flame, stick silver duct tape to a piece of waxed or parchment paper. Turn over the paper and trace the red flame onto the back. Now cut out a slightly smaller flame from inside those trace lines.
  3. Peel the paper from the backs of the flames and assemble them as shown.
  4. Gone Buggy To create a ladybug, stick a piece of red duct tape onto waxed or parchment paper. Turn over the paper and use a permanent marker to draw a circle on the back (ours are between 1 and 1 1/2 inches across). Cut it out.
  5. Stick black duct tape onto waxed or parchment paper and use the same technique to create a 1-inch-tall triangle, a 1/2-inch semicircle head, and 6 tiny legs. Use a hole punch to make 6 or 7 dots.
  6. Peel away the paper and assemble the bug.
