Slime Bucket Costume Craft

Total Time afternoon or evening Ages teen

This toxic creation, featuring expanding foam and neon green paint, will have your child positively glowing.

What you'll need

  • Hammer and nail
  • 32-gallon plastic trash barrel with lid
  • Wire cutters
  • Permanent marker
  • Duct tape
  • Newspaper
  • 2 bottles of nontoxic sprayable expanding insulating foam (we used triple-expanding Touch 'n Foam made by Convenience Products)
  • Black cotton work gloves
  • Black baseball cap
  • Two 2-ounce bottles of neon green hair spray (sold at party stores)

How to make it

1. Use the hammer and nail to make a pilot hole in the bottom of the trash barrel (a parent's job). Push the wire cutters through the hole and cut out the bottom. Draw an oval (at least 13 by 10 inches) in the center of the lid and cut it out using the same method.

2. Fashion a pair of duct tape suspenders. For each one, set a 27-inch length of duct tape sticky side up on a table and press a second 27-inch length sticky side down on top of it so that all the edges match up. Tape the suspenders' ends to the inner lid, as shown. Have your child try on the lid; adjust the strap lengths if needed.

3. Tape the lid onto the barrel, and you're ready to apply the slime.

4. Cover your work surface with newspaper and spray the insulating foam according to the manufacturer's directions around the opening in the trash barrel lid and out toward the edges to create a drippy look (a parent's job). Apply small dollops of foam to the work gloves too. Stuff newspaper into the baseball cap so it will keep its shape and spray foam on it too. Allow the foam to expand and dry.

5. Spritz the neon hair spray onto the dried foam to color it green.
