Sand Art

Sandpainting is the centuries-old technique of creating colorful patterns and designs using sand and other natural supplies. For their designs, the Navajo of the Southwest use crushed rock and other natural materials such as charcoal and crushed flower petals, but your child can try a simplified version of this ancient art using sandpaper and colored sand from the craft store.

Materials

  • Pencil
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue
  • Colored craft sand
  • Newspaper

Instructions

1. First, have your child use a pencil to sketch a design of her liking onto sandpaper.

2. When the design is ready, she can use a paintbrush to apply a mixture of equal parts glue and water to one area at a time, then sprinkle a single hue of colored craft sand over the glue. Shake any excess sand onto a piece of newspaper, then pour it back into the container for future use.

3. Repeat the process for each color of sand, then set the design aside to dry.
