Plastic Posies

Total Time Needed: 2-3 Hours

Perched atop a PVC-pipe stem, these ever-blooming milk jug flowers get their radiant hues from permanent markers, not Mother Nature. When purchasing the PVC, keep in mind that it's sold by its internal diameter. The external diameter will be larger.

Materials

  • 3/4-inch PVC cap
  • 3 to 4 plastic drink jugs (we used gallon size) cut into petals
  • 3-inch length of 3/4-inch PVC pipe
  • 45-degree elbow for 3/4-inch PVC pipe
  • 2- to 4-foot piece of 3/4-inch PVC pipe

Instructions

  1. For each flower, cut the 3/4-inch pipe to size, as shown here, with a hacksaw (a parent's job).
  2. With a permanent marker, draw petal outlines on each jug, making sure the mouth of the jug is at the center of the petals.
  3. Cut out the petals with scissors. Parents can make it easier for kids by first removing the bottom of the jug and the handle.
  4. With permanent markers, decorate the flower petals.
  5. Working from the bottom up, assemble the flower as shown. The petal pieces should fit loosely over the 3-inch length of pipe. Slide on the cap to hold them in place. Insert the pipe stem into the ground.
