Merida's Brave Bento Box

Merida's Brave Bento Box

Prep Time 30 minutes

This special school lunch is fit for a strong princess and draws inspiration from Princess Merida and her Scottish Highlands home.

by Anne Coleman

What you'll need

  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Multi-colored food markers
  • Carrots
  • Red bell pepper
  • Yellow bell pepper
  • Green bell pepper
  • Baby spinach leafs
  • Meatballs
  • Vanilla wafers
  • Dried cranberries
  • Cake icing
  • Seasoned rice or mashed potatoes, for the background

How to make it

  1. Fill in the background with seasoned rice or mashed potatoes.
  2. The hard-boiled egg forms Merida's face. Use edible markers to draw features. Make thin carrot strips with a vegetable peeler for Merida's hair. Place the face against a backing of baby spinach leaves to form Merida's cloak. A small round of yellow pepper is her cloak pin.
  3. Green, yellow and red peppers are cut to make Merida's bow and arrow.
  4. Two meatballs stand in for mini haggis (a traditional Scottish pudding made from sheep's liver, heart and lungs.)
  5. Make Scottish sweet buns from mini vanilla wafers with bits of dried cranberries fixed to the tops with dabs of cake icing.
