Homemade Chocolate Graham Crackers Recipe

Chocolate always seems to find a way to appear in my recipes. I had been making graham crackers at home for a few months now, but this time I decided to add a bit of cocoa powder. The end result was a mild and filling cookie that even my toddler enjoys as a snack. They are also a great idea as a snack to-go because they don't crumble easily and can be kept at room temperature.

Best part is, kids can help make them since over-stirring doesn't ruin the recipe and it becomes a fun activity to roll the dough and cut it into shapes. These are actually easy and fun to make!

What you'll need

  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons softened butter (1/2 stick at room temperature)
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons water

Helpful Tip:

If you don't have molasses, just use honey to substitute it.

Use graham flour in place of whole wheat flour, if available.

Variations:

Spread each with dulce de leche to make sandwiches. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to turn them into a yummy and good looking dessert!

How to make it

1. Preheat the oven at 350° F. 

2. Beat the sugar, egg and butter in a bowl until creamy. Add the honey and molasses and stir.

3. Use the water to dissolve the baking soda and add to the mixture.

4. Add the salt, cocoa powder and flours to the batter and blend until everything sticks together. It should be a manageable dough. If it's to wet and sticky add a bit more whole wheat flour.

Using cookie cutters to make shapes

5. Dust a clean, flat surface with whole wheat flour and roll dough to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Let kids use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.

6. Bake in an ungreased cookie sheet for 8 to 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
