This fun kitchen science project teaches kids how to churn butter - and sneaks in a dollop of African-American history.*
Ingredients
- whipping cream
- salt
Instructions
Fill a small plastic tub half full with whipping cream. Place two or three clean marbles inside.
1. Seal the tub, then shake it vigorously for about 15 minutes. The cream will separate into butter lumps and buttermilk.
2. Pour off the liquid. Wrap the butter in a paper towel or clean dish towel and squeeze out any remaining liquid. Add salt, if desired, and serve.
Notes:
* What does this have to do with African American History Month? In 1891, African-American inventor A.C. Richardson patented a better butter churn.
