Squawking Parrot

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

This squawking parrot comes to life in the shadows. You can also make a lanky giraffe and toothy alligator action shadow puppet.

Materials

  • Card stock in assorted colors
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Glue
  • Paper fasteners
  • Yarn or embroidery floss for a giraffe mane and tail
  • Multicolored craft feathers for parrot plumage
  • Flexible straws

Instructions

Squawking Parrot - Step 1

1. Cut out the shapes as shown from the card stock. Punch an eyehole in the center of the head and another in the top of the wing as well as the rectangular body, where you will fasten the pair together.

2. Glue the head atop the body, then glue the straight edge of the belly to the body. For the beak, glue the red circle to the head and snip out a small pie wedge.

3. Attach the wing with a paper fastener. Then give your parrot some fancy plumage by gluing craft feathers to its head, wing, and tail.

4. Finally, glue a flexible straw to the back of the body for holding the parrot, and another to the back of the wing so you can flap it.

Squawking Parrot - Step 5

5. To cast shadows with your action puppets, simply hold the critters up in front of a desk lamp or flashlight pointed toward a wall. Then have someone turn off any other lights and let the show begin.

Tips:

The measurements we used are:

Body: 6 1/2 inches
