Snowboarder Hat

Total Time Needed: Afternoon Or Evening

This hat's floppy fringe and foam stars are sure to turn heads on the slopes, the school bus, or anywhere else. The knotted top saves sewing time and makes this noggin warmer especially easy for a kid to make.

Materials

  • Blue fleece (To determine the width, measure the circumference of your child's head, divide by 2, and add 2 inches. The length should be 21 inches. Be sure the fleece is cut so that it stretches widthwise.)
  • Orange fleece (the same size as the blue piece)
  • Chalk
  • Ruler
  • Sewing machine and blue or orange thread
  • Pinking shears
  • 9- by 12-inch sheet of white craft foam (larger if you want more stars) or precut foam shapes about 2 inches wide
  • Hole punch

Instructions

Snowboarder Hat - Step 1

1. Place the blue and orange pieces right sides together and be sure that the stretch on both pieces is horizontal. Use chalk and a ruler to mark side seams 1 inch in from each side and 11 inches long. Mark 2 points 3 inches from the bottom.

Snowboarder Hat - Step 2

2. Beginning at the 3-inch marks, sew the pieces together along the chalk line (see dotted lines). Use pinking shears to trim the excess along the seam to 1/2 inch (see red zigzag lines). Continue trimming to the top of the fabric. Do not trim below the 3-inch marks. Pink the bottom edge of the hat as well.

Snowboarder Hat - Step 3

3. Turn the hat right sides out and stitch the remaining 3 inches to the bottom on each side. Trim the fabric along the seam to 1/2 inch and turn up the brim.

Snowboarder Hat - Step 4

4. Lay the hat flat and, using pinking shears, cut through both layers to make fringe 10 inches long and 1 inch wide. If you like, use chalk and a ruler to mark cutting lines first.

Snowboarder Hat - Step 5

5. Double-knot the fleece strip pairs together to close the top of the hat.

Snowboarder Hat - Step 6

6. Cut stars of various sizes from the foam. Use a hole punch to make holes in the center of each star. To attach each star, poke the end of a fleece strip through the hole and knot.
