Reindeer Hat Christmas Craft

Reindeer Hat Christmas Craft

Total Time Needed: Afternoon Or Evening

Your child will lead the pack in true Rudolph style with this cap whose fanciful antlers are made from a pair of basic knit gloves.

Materials

  • Brown fleece (You'll need a piece that's 15 inches long and wide enough to fit around your child's head. See Snowman Hat materials list for details.)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Sewing machine
  • Brown thread
  • Pinking shears
  • 1 pair of stretchy black knit gloves (we used adult Magic Gloves)
  • Needle
  • Fiberfill
  • Fabric glue (we used Fabri-Tac), optional
  • 2 black buttons (pupils)
  • 2 slightly larger white buttons (eyeballs)
  • 1 large red pom-pom (nose)

Instructions

Reindeer Hat - Step 1

1. Fold the fleece in half. Be sure that the stretch is horizontal and that the right sides are together. Cut 3 inches off the top of the fleece as shown. Set this strip aside for the ears. The remaining piece should now be 12 inches long.

Reindeer Hat - Step 2

2. To create the rounded top of the hat, center a plate on the fleece and trace around it with chalk. Continue the line to the bottom of the fabric on both sides. Mark a point 4 inches up from the bottom on each side. Remove the plate.

Reindeer Hat - Step 3

3. Starting and ending at the 4-inch marks, stitch the fabric together, following the chalk line (see dotted line). Use regular scissors to trim the fabric along the seam to 1/2 inch (see red line). Do not trim below the 4-inch mark. Use pinking shears to finish the bottom edge of the hat.

Reindeer Hat - Step 4

4. Turn the hat right side out and stitch the remaining 4 inches to the bottom on each side. Trim the fabric along those seams to 1/2 inch and turn up the brim.

Reindeer Hat - Step 5

5. Loosely stuff the glove antlers with fiberfill and hand-stitch the turned-in cuffs to the hat just in front of the side seams.

6. Using the extra fabric from step 1, cut 2 leaf-shaped ears (ours are 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches each). Glue or sew 1 end to pinch it in as shown. Sew the ears in place on the hat.

7. Sew the white buttons in place, then sew or glue the black buttons onto the white buttons. Glue or sew the pom-pom nose to the center of the brim. Let the glue on the hat dry for 24 hours.

Tips:

Laundry Instructions for hat:

  • Place the hat in a pillowcase and knot the case closed.
  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
