What's better than the satisfaction of finishing a job? Being able to slide the markers on this handy chart from "Do it!" to "Done!"
Materials
- corrugated cardboard
- card stock or regular paper
- cereal box
- bamboo skewers (we used 8)
- plastic straws
- glue stick
- tacky glue
- pen and/or marker
- poster tack or removable poster tape
Instructions
1. Cut a 4- by 7 1/2-inch piece and a 1- by 7 1/2-inch strip from the cardboard, making sure the corrugations are parallel to the short sides. Cut a 4- by 7 1/2-inch, a 1- by 7 1/2-inch, and a 9-by 7 1/2-inch piece from the card stock. For the backing behind the skewers, cut a 9- by 7 1/2-inch piece from the cereal box cardboard. Trim the blunt ends from the skewers so that each is about 6 inches long.
2. Insert the pointed ends of the skewers into the corrugations of the larger piece of cardboard as shown, about 1 inch apart. Remove the skewers and reinsert them blunt end first.
3. Cut the straws into 3/4-inch segments. Slide them onto the skewers, using multiple segments for tasks that are done a few times a week.
4. Slide the strip of cardboard onto the skewers.
5. Use the glue stick to cover the cardboard sections with their matching card stock pieces. Adhere the remaining piece of card stock to the cereal box cardboard so that it will be visible behind the skewers, as shown. Attach the skewer assembly to the cereal box backing with tacky glue. Write your list of tasks as shown.* Hang the chart with poster tack or removable poster tape.
Tips:
If your child's tasks change, just glue a new chore list on top of the old one. Or, to make editing the list even easier, turn it into a dry-erase board with self-adhesive dry-erase paper.
