A Parrot for a Pirate

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

A craft inspired by "Everything I Know About Pirates" by Tom Lichtenhel

Nothing befits a pirate-loving kid better than a parrot (although an eye patch runs a close second). These fanciful specimens, perched on the shoulders of their scurvy landlubber owners, were spied around town for days after they were created at my libraries in Idaho and Iowa.

Materials

  • Parrot template (see Step 1)
  • Paper
  • Card stock
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Tacky glue
  • Colored feathers
  • Googly eyes
  • Tape

Instructions

Download the parrot template.

(To view the .pdf file, you'll need Adobe Reader. which is available for free from the Adobe site.)

Glue the template onto card stock and cut it out.

Decorate the parrot with markers and use tacky glue to adorn it with colored feathers and a googly eye.

Finally, fold the paper tab along the creases and tape the bird to your pirate's shoulder.
