Rapunzel Costume

Total Time Needed: 1-2 Hours

Bring a fairy-tale character to life with this showstopping costume.

Materials

  • Materials for our basic wig, including 2 skeins curly yarn (ours is Lion Brand's Homespun)
  • Ribbon
  • White craft foam
  • Double-sided tape
  • Organza (or other gauzy fabric)
  • Tapestry needle

Instructions

1. Wig: See the basic wig instructions. Rapunzel's long tresses require two skeins of curly yarn. Our wig's hair is 70 inches long and a bit unwieldy; for easier braiding, try making a length 60 inches or shorter. Let the yarn drape loosely around the head, then use a piece of yarn to tie it in a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Braid the ponytail, tying the end with a piece of yarn and a ribbon.

Rapunzel Hat

2. Hat: Cut a semicircle from white craft foam and use double-sided tape to attach a piece of organza to the flat edge, as shown. Add a second layer of double-sided tape to the organza edge but don't expose the sticky top yet. First, roll the foam into a cone with a base about 5 inches in diameter. Make a small mark where the foam overlaps. Unroll the cone, expose the tape's adhesive, then roll up the cone and secure it.

3. Thread a tapestry needle with yarn. Tack the hat onto the wig with a stitch on each side of the cone, leaving the yarn loose. Have your child try on the wig. Make any adjustments needed to the hat placement before tightening the yarn and tying it off inside the wig's cap. Attach a ribbon band with double-sided tape.

4. For the rest of the costume, make a craft foam hat with an organza veil. Use double-sided tape to attach a ribbon to a nightgown, and tie the ribbon in back.
