Total Time Needed: Afternoon Or Evening

This freestanding shelf design employs gravity to keep your DVDs, CDs, or even books neat and accessible. Assembled from just three pieces, it makes a great starter project for aspiring young carpenters.

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • 1 5/8-inch drywall screws
  • 100-grit sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Paint

1. Cut the following pieces from the 2-foot pine board:

6-inch end

2-inch leg

2. In the shelf, drill six 1/8-inch holes for 1 5/8-inch drywall screws, as shown. Working with the pieces on edge, screw the leg and the end to the shelf.

3. Use sandpaper to slightly round the edges of the wood. Then prime and paint the holder as you like. If you use more than one color, as we did, paint the pieces before you assemble them.
