If your household could use some good luck, have your child try her hand at making a khamsa, a traditional North African amulet. Customarily, a khamsa (meaning "five" in Arabic) can be made of leather, brass, or silver and elaborately decorated with beads, coins, or pieces of coral. This simpler version is just as jazzy but calls for paper, paints, sequins, and glitter.
Materials
- Colored construction paper or poster board
- Pencil or marker
- Scissors
- Paper shapes
- Sequins, glitter, gems, and paint pens
- Glue or tape
- Ribbon
Instructions
- Have your child trace her or your hand onto a folded piece of colored construction paper or poster board. Cut out the tracing so that you have 2 paper hands matched back to back.
- Mark the backs with an X, then embellish the unmarked sides with paper shapes, sequins, glitter, gems, and paint pens. When both hands are dry, glue or tape the unadorned sides together with a loop of ribbon between them for hanging.
