Homemade Nativity Scene: Baby Jesus

Baby Jesus

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

Here's the Baby Jesus to lay in the manger.

Materials

  • Pipe cleaner
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • 1 to 2 jumbo cotton balls, unrolled
  • 3 to 5 feet of skin-colored worsted-weight yarn
  • 8 to 10 feet of bulky-weight, blanket-colored yarn (we used Lamb's Pride, by the Brown Sheep Company)
  • Tacky glue
  • 5-mm sequin for eyes

Instructions

Away in a Manger: Baby Jesus - Step 1

1. Fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist the folded end to form a head stem, as you did with the adult figures.

Away in a Manger: Baby Jesus - Step 2

2. Twist the pipe cleaners about ¾ inch down to make a head loop, and 1 inch below that for a body loop. Trim the ends and twist for a foot stem.

3. Wrap the head and body with unrolled cotton.

4. Tie the center of the skin-colored yarn around the neck and wrap, double-thick, up to the head stem and back (glue if needed). Tie at the neck as with the adults. Fold down the head and foot stems.

Away in a Manger: Baby Jesus - Step 5

5. Tie one end of the blanket yarn around the neck. Wrap the body and head as shown. Use glue if needed. Tie off the yarn at the neck, trim it, and tuck in the ends. To make eyes, cut the sequin in half and glue in place.
