Hidden Storage Vanity Mirror

Total Time Needed: 1-2 Hours

Constructed from a pizza-box base, this fancy vanity mirror will make your child feel like a star. The "lights" surrounding the box are actually storage cubbies for hair ties and bows, while the hooks inside hold necklaces and other accessories. Our directions are for the deluxe version you see here. You can simplify the design by placing cubbies on only two sides or by omitting the pom-poms or ribbon.

Materials

  • Scissors
  • 12-inch-square corrugated-cardboard pizza box
  • Clear packing tape
  • 2 (12-inch-square) sheets of colored paper
  • Glue stick
  • Grosgrain ribbon
  • Double-sided tape (we like Terrifically Tacky scrapbooking tape for its extra-strong hold)
  • Pom-pom trim and/or loose pom-poms (we used both)
  • Hot glue
  • 7-inch-wide round mirror (available at craft stores)
  • Tacky glue
  • 20 (8-ounce) plastic bottles
  • 3-D glue dots
  • Card stock
  • Small adhesive-backed hooks
  • Nails, screws, or 3M Command picture-hanging strips
  • 1-inch washer and an adhesive-backed magnet (optional)

Instructions

1. Trim any overhanging tabs on the pizza box so that they are flush with the sides and bottom. Reinforce all of the box and lid corners with the clear packing tape.

2. Cut a 5-inch-wide hole (a CD makes a great template) from the center of one of the sheets of colored paper. Use a glue stick to adhere that sheet to the box lid and the second sheet to the inside of the box.

3. Attach lengths of grosgrain ribbon to the box lid with double-sided tape, leaving the center circle bare.

4. If you're using pom-pom trim, secure it with hot glue along the outer edge of the mirror's back.

5. Apply hot glue to the back of the mirror and press it to the bare cardboard in the center of the lid. Use tacky glue to add more pom-poms around the mirror's edge.

6. Remove the bottles' labels. Cut the top from each bottle so that you end up with a base that's 1/4 inch taller than the box's depth (ours are a bit over 2 inches tall).

7. Attach the bottle bases to the sides of the box with 3-D glue dots. Place one long piece of packing tape along each five-bottle section, from one corner of the box to the next, following the contours of the bottles snugly. Trim any excess tape.

8. Cut out 20 2-inch-wide card stock circles. Adhere them to the insides of the cubbies with small pieces of double-sided tape.

Hidden-Storage Vanity Mirror - Step 9

9. Attach the adhesive-backed hooks to the inside of the box.

10. To hang the vanity, nail or screw it directly to the wall, or use two medium-size picture-hanging strips. Our vanity's door stayed closed on its own; if yours falls open, tape a washer where shown. Attach an adhesive-backed magnet inside the box where it will line up with the washer.
