Glad Hatter Craft | Homemade Hats

Glad Hatter Craft

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

These decorated hats give new meaning to the expression "wearing a grin from ear to ear."

Materials

  • Flat-top cotton hat
  • Cardboard
  • Fabric paints
  • Paintbrushes

Instructions

1. Trim the cardboard to fit into the top of the hat; this will keep the fabric flat while you decorate it.

2. Paint the hat top to create a colored face (it's a good idea to mix whatever tint you choose with a bit of white to make the paint more opaque). Use two coats, if needed, allowing the paint to dry after each application.

3. Lightly pencil on facial features and use different shades of paint to fill them in. Some features may need to be done in layers. To create a toothy grin, for example, first paint on white teeth only. When they dry, you can outline them with thin black lines or enclose them in bright pink lips. Once the last layer of paint dries, remove the cardboard from the hat, and it's ready to wear.

Variations:

For a quick decorating alternative, simply cut eyes, a nose and a mouth out of adhesive-backed felt and firmly press them onto the hat.
