Frightening Favors

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

You're sure to be in good favor with departing guests if you send them home with one of these Halloween pencil toppers.

Materials

  • Wooden dowel cap
  • Pencil
  • White cloth
  • Dental floss
  • Googly eyes
  • Paint
  • Black paper

Instructions

  1. To make one, fit a 1-inch wooden dowel cap (sold at most craft and hobby stores) over the eraser end of an unsharpened pencil. You may have to wrap the eraser with masking tape to achieve a snug fit.
  2. Then, for a ghost, drape a 7-inch square of white cloth or plastic over the cap and tightly tie it just below the cap with dental floss.
  3. Add googly eyes and draw on a mouth with black permanent marker.
  4. For a mummy, color a small area on one side of the cap green with paint or a paint marker and let it dry.
  5. Cover the cap with strips of white cloth tape, leaving the green area exposed. Add googly eyes and draw on a mouth with permanent marker.
  6. To make a spider, paint the cap black. While it dries, trim and curl 3-inch-long black paper strips to resemble spider legs and glue them around the base of the cap, as shown. Add a pair of googly eyes.
