Felt Gift Stockings Holiday Craft

Felt Gift Stockings Holiday Craft

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

Sock away gifts in these one-of-a-kind personalized stockings.

Materials

  • Felt
  • Newspaper
  • Broad-tipped marker
  • Straight pins or masking tape
  • Fabric scissors
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Embroidery floss
  • Wide-eyed needle
  • Ribbon
  • Beads

Instructions

  • Make a pattern by drawing a large stocking shape on newspaper with the colored marker. Cut out the pattern, and pin or tape it onto a doubled piece of felt. Using fabric scissors, cut around the pattern and through the felt.
  • On one of the felt cutouts, apply a line of hot glue 1/4 inch from the edge along both sides and around the foot, but not across the top. Lay the second cutout on top of the first, so that the edges match up. Then, set a heavy book on top of them to make the seams stick.
  • Once the glue dries, use embroidery floss and a wide-eyed needle to accent the seam with decorative stitching.
  • Make a hanger for the stocking by tying a loop in a piece of ribbon or a strip of felt and stitching the knot to the back of the felt.
  • Personalize the stocking with the recipient in mind. For example, give a teacher a stocking with a felt apple on the front and filled with a batch of homemade cookies or new school supplies. For a friend, use felt letters to spell out a nickname or popular saying and fill with a special ornament, chocolates or a favorite paperback book.

Tips:

If the stocking is for a family pet, glue on a felt nose, mouth, whiskers, eyes and a pair of long floppy dog ears or short pointy cat ears (glue the bases of the ears to the inner top edge of the stocking). Don't forget to glue on a rhinestone collar--a piece of ribbon studded with a row of shiny beads. Then, stuff the stocking with a rawhide chew, a new brush or leash, or other pet treats.
