Firefly Pluffy Clay

Total Time Needed: 2-3 Hours

This silky-soft clay is like Sculpey's friendly cousin — it's super light, super moist, and pliable enough for little hands to mold. Once it's baked, you can paint it, bend it, or even drop it in the pool or tub (it floats!). Since Pluffy is easy to stamp and bakes up lighter than regular polymer, it's perfect for making dangly accessories, such as earrings, pendants, and key chains.

(Available in 16 colors from Polyform Products, $4, at Michaels)

Materials

  • Pluffy Clay
  • Stamping objects, such as marker caps
  • Toothpick
  • Paintbrushes and acrylic paint (optional)
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Jump rings
  • Jewelry cord, earring hooks, and/or key rings (available at craft stores)

Instructions

For the jewelry, stamp or etch designs onto clay disks (see tip below). We used a marker cap to make circles and the toothpick to draw lines and make leaf shapes. For the keychain, mold a piece of clay into a thin letter, then flatten it onto a larger clay rectangle. If desired, use a butter knife to recut the rectangle shape.

Use the toothpick to poke a hole about 1/8 inch from the top of each disk or tag. Bake the clay according to the package instructions. Let it cool completely.

If you like, brush on a coat of paint, as we did on the pendant and earrings, pushing color into the stamped design. Use a paper towel to wipe off the excess, leaving paint in the indentations. Let it dry. Seal the paint with a coat of Mod Podge and let it dry.

Use the needle-nose pliers to add jump rings. To make a necklace or earrings, string the disk on a length of jewelry cord or attach the disks to hooks. For the keychain, put the tag on a key ring.

Tips:

"To avoid leaving palm prints on the clay when I'm pressing it into a disk, I use something else to flatten it," FamilyFun craft tester Nicole Blum advises. "The bottom of a plain glass jar works well, as does the piece of coated cardboard from inside the Pluffy package."
