Domino Designs

Here's a new T-shirt design that's sure to have a domino effect. Everyone who sees it is going to want one. No problem. The technique is easy to master. In fact, you can use it to produce a variety of decorative shapes, or even letters.

Materials

  • Plain T-shirt
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard, trimmed to fit inside the shirt
  • Scissors
  • Con-Tact paper
  • Quarter or half-dollar
  • Pen
  • Spray fabric dye in 2 colors (we used Tulip brand Cool Color Spray for Fabric)
  • Disposable container
  • Cork (with a diameter smaller than the coin you are using

Instructions

Place the T-shirt on a newspaper-covered work surface. Insert the cardboard between the front and back of the shirt to keep the color from bleeding through when you spray it on.

Cut a 15- by 20-inch piece of Con-Tact paper from the roll. Draw an 11- by 5-1/2 inch domino shape in the center and cut it out. Set aside the cutout momentarily while you remove the backing from the larger rectangle and stick it firmly onto the front of the shirt. Cut out a thin strip of Con-Tact paper and attach it to the shirt so that it divides the cutout area vertically into 2 sections.

For domino dots, trace around your coin onto the back of the 11- by 5-1/2 inch piece of Con-Tact paper. Cut out the circles, peel off the backs, and apply the dots to the shirt to create any domino pattern you wish.

Wearing safety goggles, spray the prepared fabric with dye, then peel off the Con-Tact paper.

Next, pour some of the second color of dye into a container. Dip the end of the cork into the dye.

Use the cork to stamp color into the center of each circle. Allow the dye to dry completely. (Before washing the shirt, refer to the instructions on the dye bottle label.)
